What is a Power Inverter?

In the realm of electricity and electronics, there are two types of currents that are used: direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC). While direct current has a constant voltage, alternating current will periodically switch between positive and negative states as directions change in accordance. Depending on whether you are charging a battery, using a washing machine, or any other activity with electrical systems, it is important to note that most applications necessitate the use of either AC or DC voltage specifically. In the instance that one is in a situation where there is no access to both types of voltage, a device known as a power inverter may be used. Power inverter systems are extremely useful and reliable, yet they can face various issues over time that may necessitate troubleshooting. As such, this blog will cover basic maintenance tips for inverters that can help you ensure continual operation.

In their most basic form, power inverters are simply power converter devices that are able to transform the direct current from a battery into alternating current that may be used by appliances and other accepting electronics. To do this, it utilizes an oscillator that switches polarity settings to create the alternating current wave. As such devices also provide various levels of current output, they can often be used by a majority of devices.

When issues begin to occur, it is important to quickly narrow down what the source may be. Could it potentially be a loose connection with the battery, or a corroded battery terminal that is preventing flow? In other cases, the issue may be a faulty power switch, discharged battery, or a blown fuse. In any case, it is useful to have the knowledge of how to carry out basic troubleshooting.

When the power inverter is not functional, the first thing you should do is check the switch. This can be done by disconnecting the inverter from its power source and attaching it to another appliance. If it does not turn on, you will most likely need to contact an electrician to get the power switch replaced, or do it yourself. Another issue may be the battery, and it is most common to simply have loose connections that need to be cleaned and tightened. If this is not the case, check the battery and its connections for any corrosion or rust. If there is corrosion or rust, you may be able to clear it with the proper solutions and equipment. In some instances, the battery and inverter may be perfectly healthy, and the battery simply needs to be recharged.

If none of this works, you should diagnose the inverter itself. To do this, get a diagram of the device, and check each contact point one by one within the housing. If everything seems good, you can check all other components. Once any faulty part is found, you should be sure to order and replace parts as soon as you can. With replacements procured and installed, you can move onto the testing phase where you may use a voltmeter to ensure that output levels are all fine.
