AC Motors: The difference between the Stator and Rotor

AC motors are common equipment pieces that are capable of transforming electric energy into mechanical energy. With the various types of AC motors available, such apparatuses may benefit applications such as appliances, compressor drives and systems, conveyor systems, hydraulic pumps, HVAC equipment, transportation equipment, computers, and much more. Across all variations, AC motors conduct operations through the use of their stator and rotor, those of which are two electrical components that enable the conversion of electrical energy.

Within the assembly of a typical AC motor, the stator serves as a stationary electrical component that comes in the form of electromagnets. With their arrangement, the electromagnets create a hollow cylinder in which each pole faces into the center. The rotor, meanwhile, acts as the rotating component of the assembly. Also coming in the form of electromagnets placed in a cylinder arrangement, the AC motor rotor has its poles facing the poles of the stator. The rotor is also mounted on the shaft of the motor, allowing the two to revolve with one another.

In order for a magnetic field to be generated for the means of operation, the AC motor stator may take advantage of a three-phase power supply for the coils. Through proper power supply lead connection and the winding of the stator coils, a rotating magnetic field may be generated within the AC motor stator. Each phase of the power supply will typically be attached to opposite poles while the coils are wound in a similar direction. In order to affect the polarity of the AC motor poles, the coil current may be adjusted. For proper operations, facing poles should also have opposite polarity when the electromagnets of two opposing stators are wound in a similar direction.

Depending on whether an AC motor is a synchronous or induction type, the operations of the apparatus may vary. While less commonly used, synchronous AC motors will generally have their rotor poles wound with coils, establishing fixed polarity poles with the use of DC power. With induction motors, on the other hand, no external power is provided to the motor for its operations. Rather, a conductor is either passed through a magnetic field or a magnetic field is passed by a conductor. Due to this motion, electrical current is induced to the conductor, hence the naming of such motors. As current is induced to the rotor conductors, a magnetic field is generated which results in the creations of permanent magnets. This allows for the rotation of the rotor as the magnetic field of the stator rotates, meaning that the motor shaft is driven as well. As such, the rotation of the motor shaft allows for electrical energy to be converted into mechanical energy which may be used to drive a connected load.

With their varying characteristics and uses, stator and rotor components both serve very important roles in the standard operations of an AC motor. Such components also may be found in numerous settings or applications, coming in the form of bar dummy stator components, baffle turbine stator parts, adapter stator products, accelerometer rotor components, actuator rotor parts, and much more.
